The Future of Interaction Design
Bret Victor's article A Brief Rant on The Future of Interaction Design has stirred up a fair amount of discussion and for good reason. An ex-employee of Apple, Bret was responsible for researching experimental hardware and input technologies and conceiving conceptual interfaces and applications. Judging by the tone of his article he is somewhat disillusioned with our current state of interactive devices and calls us to think beyond interactions which are simply gestural in nature. He speaks to how amazingly complex and capable our hands are and envisions a world where we create devices that harness the full potential of the human body.
I'm equally inspired and struggling to get the image of Ripley in the mech-suit from Aliens out of my head. But, I do admire Bret's passion to think far beyond the "magical" devices we carry around with us everyday. That the explosion of technology & applications over the past 30 years is simply staggering. I'm sure Bret's vision of the future isn't too far off and entirely possible in the next 30.
